  • Leading the Charge: Revolutionizing Fashion through Decarbonization and Supply Chain Transformation

    At The Giving Movement (TGM), we're on a mission to revolutionize the fashion industry by prioritizing sustainability and ethical practices. Our collaboration with Terrascope has been a game-changer in understanding our carbon footprint, particularly our Scope 3 emissions.

    Our Journey So Far: We embarked on this journey to get a clear picture of our emissions across our vast supply chain, which spans two continents and over 200 suppliers. While we had already implemented biodegradable packaging and low-emissions wash care instructions, we knew we could do more.

    Partnering with Terrascope: Teaming up with Terrascope, we dove deep into our emissions data. Within just two weeks, we processed 1,200 business activity line items, giving us the granularity we needed to prioritize our reduction efforts. Here’s what we discovered:

    1. Emissions Hotspots: We found that upstream transportation was a major emissions hotspot, responsible for a quarter of our overall emissions. By optimizing our logistics, we identified an opportunity to reduce these emissions by 18.7%.
    2. Data-Driven Decisions: With a comprehensive understanding of our emissions, we established a scalable and repeatable model for emissions measurement and management. This not only enhanced our strategic decision-making but also boosted our reporting credibility.
    3. Scope 3 Emissions Insights: We learned that 87% of our Scope 3 emissions came from three main areas: the usage of sold products (35%), the purchase of goods and services (33%), and upstream transportation (27%). 

    Optimizing Our Operations: Using Terrascope's insights, we simulated various reduction plans. One standout strategy was to prioritize sea and land transportation over air shipping, which could cut our upstream transportation emissions by 18.7% without compromising customer satisfaction. We also evaluated the best location for a new warehouse to minimize emissions and ensure timely deliveries.

    Supplier Network Improvements: Terrascope's analytics helped us pinpoint reduction opportunities within our supplier network, including waste reduction in production, adopting energy- and water-efficient technologies, and transitioning to renewable energy sources.
